Pioneering innovation

With its TSI twinchargers, Volkswagen is the only car manufacturer in the world to offer an engine that combines petrol direct injection and twin-charging: a turbocharger is used together with a supercharger to generate boost pressure. The result is a specific power output of 90 kW (122 hp) per litre – a top figure among the four-cylinder engines in the car sector.

Supercharging teamwork

The supercharger and the turbocharger complement one another ideally in the way they operate. The supercharger compensates for the well-known turbo-lag, which otherwise occurs because the turbocharger does not build up pressure effectively until the engine is turning at medium revs.

Optimum boost pressure at any engine speed

Optimum boost pressure at any engine speed

The mechanical supercharger using the Roots principle is powered via a maintenance-free belt drive directly from the crankshaft. This means that boost pressure is available even at very low engine speeds. Thanks to the demand-regulated activation of the supercharger, the TSI twincharger engines deliver powerful torque and outstanding pulling power in all driving situations and in all engine speed ranges.

Significantly improved fuel consumption

The TSI twinchargers are thoroughly economical in terms of fuel consumption as a result of twin-charging and an especially efficient petrol direct injection system, with innovative 6-hole injectors and a maximum injection pressure of up to 150 bar.
